I think best way to receive online payments or donations is with Google Checkout. Google Checkout charges no fees to non-profits (see below from Google). Many donors like to make recurring (monthly, annualy, etc.), payments, which you can do with Google Checkout, it's difficult to setup recurring donations on your own, but you can get it done for a reasonable fee at: www.altatechsolutions.com

From Google: "Non-profits who are part of the Google Grants program are eligible to receive free donation processing. Google Grants awards free AdWords advertising to non-profits who meet certain eligibility guidelines and integrates with Google Checkout to help you increase your online fundraising. If you're not a Google Grants recipient, we strongly encourage you to apply."

The best tools for online donations are with Network for Good (Groundspring) or Just Give. They are the industry standards for nonprofit donation processing and charge a smaller fee than Google.

I would also HIGHLY recommend Stay Classy rather than Causes. Causes is a great application for now, but Stay Classy 3.0 is about to become the Facebook for nonprofits and philanthropy.

CollarFree is also a company that works with Zazzle and has a specific service for nonprofits/charities.

Great points all - with one sad exception: Fundable.com appears to have closed its doors and there's a bit of a nasty-gram as the landing page for that address.

Holly,

Thanks for the ideas. Paypal and Google Checkout are extremely flexible and affordable.

Fundable is dead.

Causes is great if you can get data out of it but trying to create a big group is the first step. It has amazing potential.

Stay away from MissionFish and their 10% (!!!) transaction fee. Thats simply unethical.

As with anything, just because its free up front doesn't mean that it won't cost you in the end. If it seems too good to be true it probably is.
